Colts visit Moore River

The Lions Colts took a break from their gruelling training program last weekend to participate in a two day camp.

The boys made the trek down to Moore River to build team camaraderie and host two intra-club matches to help head coach Steven Armstrong and his assistants get a bearing on where the squad is at.

Along with the two practice matches, the group indulged in some abstract activities such as lawn bowls, canoeing and team building exercises.

Development Manager Jeff Lind stated that camps are an effective way of building a team in various ways.

“There were several goals of the camp, obviously team building was a primary goal but it also allows the coaches to observe which players have leadership skills, how the team interacts and to also get away from training and have some fun.”

In regards to leaders, Lind believes this year’s Colts team won’t be short of direction.

“There a few stand out leaders in this group, mostly the guys who have played before. Brett Whiting stands out as a strong personality along with guys like Matt Turner, Koby Somers, Andrew Vawser and Kyle Halligan. They’re all natural leaders which we hope will point the younger players in the right direction.”

The squad is currently prepping for their first pre-season game against East Perth on the 25th of February and Lind is confident the squad is making good strides.

“From my point of view the Colts side is making good progress. The coaching group’s good, the players are working hard. But that said, we haven’t played anyone yet so we don’t really have a bearing.”

“We’re excited by the height of the squad though, we seem to be a bit taller than last year’s squad so key position players won’t be hard to come by.”

When Jeff Lind was promoted over the summer to Development Manager the Colts squad were shaping to be extremely young but Lind is delighted with how things have come together.

“We’re pretty happy with how things have worked out,

“Before Christmas we thought the group was going to be extremely young when a lot of the older players moved on but as time’s progressed more players have come into the group and we’ve reached a level of stability.”

The Colts are set to play another intra club practice game this Friday at City Beach to prepare for the year’s first practice match against East Perth on the 25th of February.
