Lions Continue To Find Gold In The Fields

For many years now aspiring young footballers from the Goldfields Esperance Region have been making their way to Perth to try their luck with the Subiaco Football Club.

In 2010 this trend continues with players from the region now making up about 25% of the total League squad and another 6 players battling it out with their metro counterparts each week for a spot on the Colts list.

Goldfields Football Development Manager Darren Resuggan commented recently that, “the Subiaco Football Club provides an amazing opportunity for our local footballers to ply their trade at the next level.  It is obviously a massive step up from local footy but with a clear and defined pathway now in place the opportunities have never been greater for our future stars and with the support the SFC provide, we are starting to see some great relationships building with young players from within our communities.”

“I would like to think that this is just the tip of the ice berg and that we will continue to build on this association that the people in the Goldfields Esperance region have with the Subiaco Football Club.”

Subiaco Football Clubs new senior coach Chris Waterman is also very excited this year stating, “Our senior squad has just about been finalised for 2010 and we are very pleased that about 25% of that squad has come from our country zones.  We are very conscious of giving players from the country areas every opportunity to play at WAFL level and go beyond that to the AFL if they are good enough.  We understand our role as a football club that we are part of the pathway to the AFL but also provide a pathway for country footballers to the WAFL.”

Credit must go to Darren and his team in the Goldfields for continually running quality programs and giving the boys the best opportunity once they enter the metro system.  Subiaco is very excited to have so many fine young men follow their footballing dream with the club.  The club wishes all the boys the very best for 2010.
