Homework was put aside for the afternoon as Lake Gwelup Primary School kicked off their new Auskick program last Wednesday.

Subiaco Football Club instigated the program as a way of continuing the club’s link with grass roots football.

Organiser and teacher at the school Taylor Webb said he enjoyed promoting football and giving the kids something extra to do after school.

“This is a great way of getting them into the sport and once they are really interested we can help them develop,” he said.

Auskick is an after-school program that teaches various football skills such as kicking and handballing.

Subiaco Football Club district manager Ben Haywood said it was important for the club to have programs like Auskick as children were the future players of the club.

“[Auskick] provides an opportunity to be actively involved in physical activity, which in a time where we have health concerns such as obesity, can only be a good thing,” Haywood said.

“It gives kids a chance to play with friends, make new friends and it’s a great way for parents to become involved in their child’s life in an age where it’s often hard to strike a balance between work and family life.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to play in a fun and safe environment.”

Father of two Jamie Stewart said the program provided a way to get his kids interested in sport.

“[Auskick] is a fantastic initiative to help get the kids get into footy at an early age and this is the second year my son has done it.”

Auskick at Lake Gwelup Primary School will continue for the next six weeks every Wednesday from 3.15pm to 4.15pm.
