Subiaco District Set to Storm Aboriginal Football Super Carnivals

Wednesday, February 19, 2020 - 12:56 PM

In a little over 2 weeks the WAFC will be hosting the annual Aboriginal football super carnivals. The Nicky Winmar and Kirby Bentley cup carnivals have been two of the biggest events on the WA football calendar; with young male and female Aboriginal footballers gearing up to represent their district or region from all corners of metro and regional WA.

Subiaco District will once again be represented in both carnivals as the girls look to defend their 2019 premiership and the boys look to go one better after falling short in a grand final defeat to Claremont District. This year’s teams will be led by an experienced coaching staff in Lisa Cockie, Rick Nowrojee and Matt Debarro.

Coach Matt Debarro commented on the upcoming carnival with excitement. “I am looking forward to the carnival, it is always one of the best days in community footy. Subiaco District was well represented last year by its many talented Aboriginal footballers in both the Nicky Winmar and Kirby Bentley teams. No doubt we will see some exciting football played and some future stars identified.”

When asked about the team’s preparations Coach Lisa Cockie commented. “with the carnival being so early this year we haven’t had the prep time we’d normally like to have; but I know the teams will use what time we have to prepare and ensure we do our best on the day and above all have some fun and enjoy playing some footy.”

The final training session will be held on Monday 24th February at Balga SHS oval from 4.15pm-5.15pm. The carnival kicks off with the Kirby Bentley Cup on Saturday 29th Feb, followed by the Nicky Winmar Cup on Sunday 1st March. Both Carnivals will be held at UWA Sports Park in Mt Claremont. Don’t miss your chance to see some electrifying football and support WA’s Aboriginal talent.
